Natural vs synthetic soda ash: what is the difference?
Natural and synthetic soda ash are the same chemical, sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃, CAS 497-19-8, HS 2836.20). The difference is the route. Natural soda ash is refined from sodium carbonate minerals in the ground, mainly trona ore. Synthetic soda ash is manufactured from salt and limestone with ammonia. Worldwide, about 52 million tons a year are synthetic and about 19 million tons natural (USGS, 2025 estimate). Either can meet a buyer's specification, so the way to compare suppliers is the specification and the lot COA, not the label.
Yizhou Chem is an authorized Berun distributor and trading company. The soda ash we export is natural soda ash made by Inner Mongolia Berun Yingen Chemical Co., Ltd. in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, FOB Tianjin Xingang.
Natural and synthetic soda ash compared.
Industry facts are from the U.S. Geological Survey (Mineral Commodity Summaries, February 2026); the specification limits for our own grades are on the dense and light soda ash pages.
| Property | Natural soda ash | Synthetic soda ash |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical | Sodium carbonate, Na₂CO₃, CAS 497-19-8, HS 2836.20 | Sodium carbonate, Na₂CO₃, CAS 497-19-8, HS 2836.20 |
| Raw material | Sodium carbonate minerals in the ground: trona ore (mined or dissolved in place) or carbonate-rich brine | Salt and limestone, with ammonia in the Solvay process |
| Where it is made | A few deposits: United States (Wyoming), Turkey, Botswana, Kenya, Ethiopia, and the Inner Mongolia plants in China | Wherever salt and limestone are at hand; most of China's output |
| World production, 2025 (USGS estimate) | About 19 million tons | About 52 million tons |
| Energy, cost and wastes (USGS) | Lower production cost and lower environmental impact | Typically uses more energy and costs more; generates environmental wastes |
| Purchase specification | Same kind of limits: total alkali, chloride, iron, sulphate, insolubles, bulk density | Same kind of limits: total alkali, chloride, iron, sulphate, insolubles, bulk density |
| Grades | Dense and light | Dense and light |
We do not say natural soda ash is purer, or lower in chloride or iron, than synthetic: that depends on the plant and the lot, and the COA is where it shows.
What to compare when you switch supplier.
If you buy synthetic soda ash today, you do not need to re-qualify the chemistry, only the specification and the lot. Check these five things.
| Check | How |
|---|---|
| Total alkali (Na₂CO₃, dry basis) | Compare the limit on your purchase specification with the plant limit and the lot COA. Our supply plant's limit is ≥ 99.2% (GB/T 210-2022 Class II superior). |
| Chloride (as NaCl) and iron | Read the limits, not the route. Ours are NaCl ≤ 0.70% and Fe ≤ 0.0035%; check them against what your process or glass colour needs. |
| Bulk density and particle size | Decide dense or light first. Dense soda ash is specified at ≥ 0.90 g/mL. |
| Packing and container load | Match the bag type to your handling: jumbo bags or 50 kg woven bags, and the load per 20′ container on the quote. |
| Documents | Batch COA with every lot, a plant TDS and SDS, and origin documents. Ask for a sample with the COA before the first order. |
Dense or light? See soda ash light vs dense. Customs codes and duty are in the HS code guide, and the whole process from inquiry to cleared container is in the import guide.
The natural soda plant behind our soda ash.
Berun's Yingen plant in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, refines natural alkali ore from the Tamusu mine. Figures are Berun's own disclosures, checked 2 November 2026.
The USGS notes that natural soda ash capacity in Inner Mongolia grew by about 5 million tons a year in mid-2023. Phase 1 at Yingen makes 5 + 0.4 million t/yr at full output; phase 2 adds +2.8 million t/yr of soda ash. Read more on the About page. Natural or synthetic: what buyers ask.
What is the difference between natural and synthetic soda ash?
The route, not the chemical. Both are sodium carbonate (Na2CO3, CAS 497-19-8, HS 2836.20). Natural soda ash is refined from sodium carbonate minerals in the ground, mainly trona ore, or from carbonate-rich brine. Synthetic soda ash is manufactured from salt and limestone with ammonia (the Solvay process and its variants). The finished product is sold to the same kind of purchase specification.
Is natural soda ash better than synthetic soda ash?
Neither route makes a better molecule, and we do not claim that natural soda ash is purer or lower in any impurity: the limits that matter are the ones on the purchase specification and the lot COA. What differs is the production route. The U.S. Geological Survey writes that synthetic production typically consumes more energy and costs more than natural production, and that natural soda ash has lower environmental impacts.
Where does natural soda ash come from?
From a small number of deposits. The USGS lists natural soda ash production in the United States (Wyoming trona, about 12 million tons in 2025), Turkey, Botswana, Kenya and Ethiopia, and says that China produces some natural soda ash too. Our supply plant, Berun's Yingen plant in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, refines natural alkali ore from the Tamusu mine.
Is most soda ash natural or synthetic?
Synthetic, by volume. The USGS estimates 2025 world production at about 52 million tons synthetic and 19 million tons natural (mine production, rounded). China, the largest producer at about 38 million tons, makes mostly synthetic soda ash; the United States makes only natural soda ash.
Can I use natural soda ash in glass, detergent or chemical production in place of synthetic?
Yes, if it meets your specification. Soda ash is bought to a specification, and glass is the largest use even in the United States, where all production is natural: about 45% of U.S. soda ash use in 2025 (USGS). Send the specification you buy now and we compare it with the plant limits (GB/T 210-2022 Class II superior) and the current lot COA before quoting. A sample, 500 g with the matching plant COA, is free before a first order.
Do you supply both light and dense natural soda ash?
Yes. Both grades come from the same natural-soda plant, to the same purity limits; they differ in bulk density and particle size. See light vs dense for which to choose. Minimum order is one 20′ container (1 × 20′ FCL); one container may mix grades.
