Soda ash light vs dense: what is the difference?
Light and dense soda ash are the same chemical, sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃, CAS 497-19-8). They share HS code 2836.20 and, at the producing plant, the same GB/T 210-2022 Class II superior purity limits. The difference is physical: dense soda ash has larger, heavier particles (bulk density ≥ 0.90 g/mL, ≥ 70% retained on a 180 µm sieve), so it flows and stores well and raises less dust, and glass plants order it. Light soda ash is a finer, lower-density powder that blends and dissolves readily, and detergent, textile and water-treatment buyers order it.
Yizhou Chem is an authorized Berun distributor and trading company. We export both grades, made by Inner Mongolia Berun Yingen Chemical Co., Ltd. in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, FOB Tianjin Xingang.

Which grade to order.
Once dissolved, the two grades are the same chemical. The choice is about how the soda ash is stored, dosed and mixed in your plant.
| Use | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Container, float and other glass | Dense | Bulk density ≥ 0.90 g/mL: flows from silos and raises less dust in batch handling. |
| Powder detergent | Light | Fine, low-density powder that blends with the other ingredients and dissolves readily. |
| Textile dyeing, water softening, pH adjustment | Light (usual) | Dissolved before use, so the lighter powder is the usual order. |
| Chemical manufacturing and distribution | Either | Buyers specify dense or light on the PO; the chemical limits are the same. |
| Food industry | Light | The plant TDS lists food-industry use for light soda ash only. Tell us the food standard you need and we confirm it against the lot COA before quoting. |
Packing differs too: dense soda ash ships in 1,000 / 1,250 / 1,350 kg PP jumbo bag (ton bag) only; light soda ash in 50 kg woven bag (PE lined) · 1,000 / 1,250 kg PP jumbo bag (ton bag). See the import guide for packing and container loads of every grade, and the HS code guide for customs codes and India GST.
How the two grades are made, and how dense is dense.
In the synthetic (Solvay) process, calcining sodium bicarbonate gives light soda ash. Dense soda ash is made either by compacting, sieving and classifying light soda ash, or by the monohydrate process, in which sodium carbonate monohydrate is crystallised from solution and dried (Tata Chemicals data sheets). Our soda ash comes from a natural soda (trona) plant in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia.
Producers publish their own ranges. Tata Chemicals, for example, gives light soda ash 550–720 kg/m³ and dense soda ash 1,000–1,200 kg/m³ in its July 2024 data sheets. Those are another producer's figures: our supply plant's limit under GB/T 210-2022 is dense ≥ 0.90 g/mL (900 kg/m³), and the light-grade COA lists no bulk-density limit.
Glass is the largest use of soda ash: about 45% of U.S. use in 2025. China was the leading producer in 2025, at about 38 million tons, most of it synthetic; natural soda ash capacity in Inner Mongolia grew by about 5 million tons a year in mid-2023 (USGS, Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026).
Light or dense: what buyers ask.
Is light soda ash the same as dense soda ash?
Chemically, yes: both are sodium carbonate (Na2CO3, CAS 497-19-8), and the producing plant makes both to the same GB/T 210-2022 Class II superior limits (total alkali ≥ 99.2% dry basis, NaCl ≤ 0.70%, Fe ≤ 0.0035%). They differ in physical form. Dense soda ash is specified at bulk density ≥ 0.90 g/mL and ≥ 70% retained on a 180 µm sieve; light soda ash is a finer, lower-density powder, and its plant COA lists no bulk-density limit.
Is heavy soda ash the same as dense soda ash?
Yes. Heavy soda ash, dense soda ash and soda ash dense are names for the same grade.
Which soda ash is used for glass making?
Dense soda ash. Glass batch plants store, weigh and convey soda ash with sand and other raw materials; the heavier dense particles flow well from silos and raise less dust in batch handling than light soda ash. Glass is the largest use of soda ash: about 45% of U.S. soda ash use in 2025 (USGS).
Which soda ash is used in detergent powder?
Light soda ash. It is the usual alkaline builder in powder detergent: the fine, low-density powder blends with the other ingredients and dissolves readily. Textile and water-treatment buyers usually order light soda ash too.
Do light and dense soda ash have the same HS code?
Yes, both are HS 2836.20 (disodium carbonate). India splits the line: HSN 2836 20 10 for dense and 2836 20 20 for light soda ash. Confirm the full national tariff line with your customs broker.
Can I order light and dense soda ash in one container?
Yes. The minimum order is one 20′ container (1 × 20′ FCL), and one container may mix grades; each grade keeps its own batch numbers, bag markings and COA.
